Utah State University’s speech-language pathology program results in a Master’s of Arts (MA) or Master’s of Science (MS) in Speech-Language Pathology. This post-baccalaureate degree is part of the Western Regional Graduate Exchange program (WRGP). The program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Our program adheres to the Utah Speech-Language Pathology Professional and Educational Standards and prepares students for entry into the profession of speech-language pathology.
Students graduate prepared for employment in educational and healthcare settings and eligible for national certification and Utah state licensure. For licensure in states other than Utah, see https://www.usu.edu/online/state-authorization/.
The two-year program consists of a minimum of 57 credit hours (32 credits of academic coursework and 25 credits of clinical coursework) across six semesters of full-time study beginning with a summer semester. Students complete a Plan B thesis project or Plan C comprehensive exam. Students must take the ASHA national exam (Educational Testing Service-Praxis test) and notify the department of Praxis results to graduate. The degree is offered in Campus and Outreach tracks.
To be accepted into the master’s degree program, students must have a bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders or equivalent. Admission is on a competitive basis.

School of Graduate Studies Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U. S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program.
- Overall Graduate GPA at least 3.0 and no grades of C- or lower;
Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree.
- Course Number Acceptability
The Program of Study for a master’s degree or a doctoral degree, if the student has a master’s degree, must include at least 15 semester credits at the level of 6000 or above.
Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages (unless included in an approved Program of Study), continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 3000.
- Matriculation Start Semester
A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested by the student’s committee and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review
